This ambitious push aims to create a faster, more efficient network that will be the backbone of India’s economic and industrial growth.
India’s road network is already among the largest in the world, ranking just behind the U.S. and China. However, with projects like the Bharatmala initiative, India is poised to rival and even surpass these countries in terms of road connectivity. This network expansion not only supports traffic decongestion but also facilitates faster economic growth by improving access to markets and resources.
Here are some of the key expressways reshaping India’s landscape:
- Delhi-Mumbai Expressway
- A 1,318-km greenfield expressway connecting Delhi and Mumbai.
- Costing ₹1 lakh crore, this 8-lane expressway will cut travel time between the two cities to just 12 hours.
- Equipped with high-tech features like CCTV surveillance, flyovers, and underpasses, it’s a model of modern road safety and efficiency.
- Expected completion: December 2026, with 800 km already operational.
- Dwarka Expressway
- Spanning 29 km, this 8-lane expressway connects Delhi and Gurgaon.
- Budgeted at ₹8,662 crore, it will significantly reduce traffic congestion and provide a direct link to Delhi Airport.
- Expected to have over 20 flyovers and rail overbridges.
- Nagpur-Mumbai Expressway
- This 701-km, 6-lane expressway connects Nagpur to Mumbai with a completion target by the end of 2024.
- The ₹55,000 crore project will reduce travel time from 16 hours to 8, boosting connectivity and regional trade.
- Ganga Expressway
- A 594-km, 8-lane expressway connecting Meerut and Prayagraj.
- At a cost of ₹40,000 crore, it’s projected to elevate industrial and agricultural trade in Uttar Pradesh.
- Completion expected by 2025.
- Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway
- A 650-km expressway linking Delhi to Amritsar and Katra, reducing travel time for religious pilgrims to the Golden Temple and Vaishno Devi.
- The four-lane expressway is set to open by 2025, with minor delays due to land acquisition.
- Bangalore-Chennai Expressway
- A 260-km expressway, this crucial southern corridor will cut travel time between Bangalore and Chennai to just 2–3 hours.
- With a budget of ₹17,000 crore, this project includes over 160 bridges and flyovers, emphasizing both efficiency and economic connectivity.
- Raipur-Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor
- Also known as the Raipur-Vizag Expressway, this 464-km, 6-lane highway aims to connect Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
- Part of the Bharatmala Phase 1, it’s expected to complete by 2025 at a cost of ₹20,000 crore, reducing travel from Raipur to Vizag from 590 km to 464 km.
- Narmada Expressway
- A 900-km expressway, following the Narmada River and connecting the Gujarat and Chhattisgarh borders.
- This ₹31,000 crore project will significantly improve East-West connectivity.
- Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway
- A 62-km, 6-lane expressway, it will reduce travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur from two hours to just 50 minutes.
- The ₹4,700 crore project is set to be completed by 2025.
Other upcoming projects like the Gorakhpur-Shamli, Amas-Darbhanga, and Agra-Bareilly expressways, among many others, are being developed to bolster connectivity across the nation. With a target to complete most of these expressways in the next three years, India is paving the way for a faster, more interconnected future—one that promises to drive economic and industrial growth to new heights.
